Doom experimentalists Volur from Toronto and San Francisco's neo-classical ambient collective Amber Asylum collaborate for the split release Breaker Of Rings/Blood Witch. Both groups create dark and heavy music with a focus on string instruments, differing in approach while complementing each other on this release. On the a-side, Volur presents a narrative of alienation and trauma, reflecting on a warrior's introspective struggle and disconnection from reality post-battle. Their music expands into genres such as funeral doom and 12-tone music, with tracks inspired by the Niflung cycle from the Poetic Edda, exploring the psychological impact of violence on warriors. The material, initially intended for the trio's first album Ancestors (2017), was set aside due to its length and intensity. It includes a composition for a string quartet in the style of Alban Berg, positioning Breaker Of Rings as a fusion of funeral doom and a horror movie soundtrack.

Amber Asylum's contribution on the b-side narrates the grim tale of illness and its host, symbolized by the penetration of a female mosquito, the metaphorical Blood Witch. String arrangements and vocals create an atmosphere of discomfort and allure, delirium and dedication, distress and acceptance. Band leader Kris Force indicates that the four songs draw inspiration from early 20th-century Indian love poetry and feature performances by Jackie Perez Gratz of Grayceon on cello and bassist Erica Stoltz from Sanhedrin. The goal was to craft a piece that resonates with Volur's work while maintaining a distinct voice.
