Reseña del libro:
(* China. Pronounced ‘cheena’: designation for female, from the Quechua. Iron: The English word for Fierro, reference to the gaucho Martín Fierro, from José Hernández’s epic poem.) This narrative takes the reader from the frontier culture of the pampas into indigenous territories. It follows Mrs China Iron, Martín Fierro’s abandoned wife, as she journeys across the pampas in a covered wagon with her companion, a Scottish woman named Liz. Through their travels, China receives an education on sentiment and the British Empire, while both are introduced to Argentina’s diverse flora, fauna, cultures, and languages, as well as its national struggles. After an encounter with Colonel Hernández and a festive gathering with gauchos, they find a peaceful future in a utopian indigenous community, the Iñchiñ people. The story, seen from an ox-drawn wagon, traverses the Argentinian landscape, exploring Gaucho culture, nation-building, and colonial endeavors. Gabriela Cabezón Cámara humorously and sophisticatedly reinterprets Martín Fierro from a feminist, LGBT, postcolonial perspective, crafting a novel that is both amusing and critical in its examination of societal formation and mythical heroes.
